While trying to help a small food manufacturer improve the efficiency of their operation, I observed one of the machine operators jotting down numbers every 15 minutes in a notebook. I asked her why she was doing this. She told me she didn’t know, but that several years ago her boss, who was no longer with the company, had asked her to keep the log.
