This chapter provides an overview of many different materials for both industrial and desktop (consumer) 3D printing and helps explain how appropriate they are for handling and use. Although 3D printing is still in its infancy, the materials available are rapidly expanding, with new options becoming available almost every week. In the final chapters of this book, I describe how you can select, set up, and operate a 3D printer that uses melted plastic filament to fabricate solid objects as that's an appropriate material for the desktop 3D printers I highlight in later chapters.
