Questions We
Ask Ourselves
PURPOSE:
To help a team reflect on their purpose, structure, and rewards.
GROUP SIZE:
Works best with an intact team of 4 to 8 people.
TIME:
2 hours
PHYSICAL
SETTING:
A conference table and chairs in a room large enough for the group to
work comfortably.
MATERIALS:
Copy of the Questions We Ask Ourselves (QWAO) form for each
person.
PROCESS:
1. The team leader distributes the QWAO form to each person.
2. Each team member then shares his or her answer to the first
question with the entire team. A general discussion follows.
3. Step 2 is repeated for remaining questions.
4. The team leader conducts a general reflective discussion of the
entire team’s response and engages in an action planning
process to deal with the needs identified.
VARIATIONS:
1. Members complete the QWAO prior to the session.
2. Responses are collected from other members of the organization.
3. Another team assessment activity is Activity 15, Characteristics of
an Effective Work Team.

questions require pondering (and answers!):
1. What are we here to do?
2. How shall we organize ourselves?
3. Who is in charge?
4. Who cares about our success?
5. How do we work through problems?
6. How do we fit in with other groups?
7. What benefits do the team members need from the team?
