16. MIRROR LOCK-UP

IN A DSLR, the mirror flips up to expose the sensor every time a photograph is taken. In some cases, the flipping and stopping of the mirror causes a minor vibration in the camera that can blur the entire photograph. This blur is most likely to occur when the camera is on a tripod and the shutter speed is around 1/8 second.

With fast shutter speeds (1/60 second and faster) the vibration is frozen due to the quick recording of light. With long shutter speeds (4 seconds and longer), the minor vibrations dissipate quickly and do not register.
