IN THE QUEST for greater sharpness, the aperture setting is another key component. In theory, all lenses would deliver crisp, sharp results at every aperture; unfortunately that isn’t so. Choosing the optimum aperture setting is important, not only for light and depth of field, but also for sharpness.

Every lens is vulnerable to a number of optical complications when setting the aperture to the maximum opening. By stopping the aperture down for greater depth of field and sharpness, those optical problems are diminished, but only to a point.
