EPC for 5G
Abstract
This chapter provides an outline of the EPC for 5G. As the radio network throughput and bandwidth capacity increases, operators need more flexible ways to manage control and user plane operations. This chapter provides detailed descriptions of DECOR—Dedicated Core Networks and CUPS: Control and User Plane Separation, in preparation for the following chapters illustrating key functions in the EPC architecture such as PCEF, subscription and mobility management as well as QoS and Policy control and Charging. This chapter ties in the use of Dual Connectivity with 5G Radio type NR as an additional RAT in combination with E-UTRA, where the DC is described in more detail in Chapter 12.
