Chapter 3

Propagation & Channel Modeling

Abstract

5G requires considerably more advanced propagation and channel modeling as compared with legacy mobile communications generations. Transmission loss, and spatial and temporal dispersions need to be characterized at substantially higher frequencies in the range of 6 GHz to 100 GHz. As the resolution of 5G NR, in both delay (bandwidth) and space (direction) is substantially higher, corresponding extended requirements on channel modeling apply. Though exhaustive accurate propagation knowledge for 5G has not yet been provided, this chapter presents state-of-the-art insights on the channel frequency dependency over the full frequency range with some experimental examples of highly resolved channel ...
