This principle is most useful when you feel out of control – either of the situation or your response to it. In these situations it allows you to take control before reacting or to regain control when your initial reaction is leading you in an unhelpful direction. Essentially, it enables you to get back in the driving seat.
I should highlight that this is not about taking control of the other person but taking our control of our influence over what happens next.
