THIS MIGHT NOT WORK

I took a forced hiatus in 2011 from my work as a photographer for humanitarian organizations, the result of an accident in Italy that left me unable to walk. The last assignment I did, in the far reaches of northern Kenya among nomadic Rendille, Turkana, and Samburu tribes, changed my life.

As I write this chapter it’s January 2013 and I’m on my way back to Kenya, my head full of ideas and the expectations I should know well enough not to have. I have all kinds of notions about what my work—my resulting photographs—will be like, which sits uneasily beside the knowledge that what I will accomplish, and what images I return with, will not be that.
