Drafting and Refining the Paper
A famous economist named David Romer once outlined a detailed plan of how PhD students could graduate in 5 years or less. The plan goes something like this (from Brad DeLong’s website http://www.j-bradford-delong.net/teaching_folder/Romers_rules.html)
