Using Solver

Excel has two tools, Goal Seek and Solver, which can save a great deal of time with complex mathematics. However, Goal Seek has limited scope and is far outpaced by Solver. Solver, which is leased by Microsoft from Frontline Systems Inc., was developed primarily for solving optimization (maximum and minimum) problems. However, it can also be used to solve equations, and that is where one shall start. This chapter presents examples where Solver is used for equation solving, for curve fitting or regression analysis, and some simple optimization problems. Solver needs to be installed on the computer and loaded into Excel.
