An overview of publishing fields and publishing capital

Abstract:

Each type of book is different and each publication belongs to a different publishing field. In this chapter we explain the elements by which a publishing field is defined. Special attention is given to the components of publishing capital: economic, human, symbolic and intellectual. We elaborate on the reasons as to why libraries as distinguished public institutions inherently possess certain kinds of publishing capital and which other kinds they have to develop in order to become equal partners in certain publishing areas.
