Cutting and Piecing Together Your Monologue

Sometimes you will fall in love with a monologue that is long, perhaps even as long as a page. To make sure that it only runs sixty seconds you will have to make cuts to it. This is tricky but it can be done. The resulting speech should:

•have a Beginning, Middle and End;

•demand that you fight for something;

•be motivated by love or motivated by hate because of love.

Fig. 6.1 suggests the course your monologue wants to follow. As you can see the bubbles grow ever larger toward the end, meaning of course that it is here that you reach your greatest height of revelation and change as you finish the speech.
