Above

Upstage of a person or set piece onstage.

Action

1. What happens during the course of a play, i.e., the ‘dramatic action.’

2. What the individual actor performs in a scene in order to accomplish something, whether it is to get something from someone else or to make them do something.

Antagonist

A person or set of circumstances that stand in the way of the leading character in a play, preventing them from getting what they want.

Antithesis

1. In rhetoric, the direct opposite of one thing to another.

2. In acting, making choices that help the actor discover the opposite aspects of their character’s desire, as a means to create richer, more interesting moments onstage and greater humanity in their character.
