Overview of Technology
The textile complex consists of natural and manufactured fiber production, yarn production, fabric formation, and dyeing and finishing. Figure 2.1 illustrates the textile complex. A brief overview of the major technologies of each sector is given as follows.
Fibers
Fibers are the smallest component of fabric and are categorized as natural or manufactured. Natural fibers can be either cellulose (i.e., plant) based or protein (i.e., animal) based. Common natural cellulose fibers are cotton and flax. Common protein fibers are wool and silk. Manufactured fibers can either come from a regenerated plant source or polymers.
