APPENDIX
The Next Frontier in the Application of Statistics
Although this book focused on statistical applications using Excel, some readers may decide to move on to a software product that is specifically designed for the same procedures we have outlined and has more advanced statistical techniques.
There are many software packages in the marketplace that can accommodate an array of statistical methods. One could write a book just on all of the software available. We are limiting the coverage to the programs most familiar to the authors. The following statistical software is highlighted in this appendix: EViews, Minitab, NCSS, R, SAS, SPSS, Stata, and WINKS.
The Technology
Computing usage is getting easier, faster, and more pervasive with statistical software making complicated procedures painless. The purpose of this appendix is to present an overview and inform readers of a limited universe of the statistical software available to perform more complex analyses. The authors are not recommending any of the reviewed software packages.
EViews
EViews provides a broad range of statistics and econometric analysis with powerful modeling tools. The data-handling feature includes a conversion between Excel and EViews. An important aspect of this software is the time series data handling. EViews supports exponential smoothing (single, double) and Holt-Winters. In addition, it also supports linear models with autoregressive integrated moving average (ARIMA), seasonal autoregressive, and ...
