Chapter 4
Planning and Writing Proofs
In the previous chapter, we learned what it means to reason deductively from given information. This deductive process is at the heart of creating mathematical arguments, and it is in this chapter that we begin to learn how to structure and develop mathematical proofs. We will see that the way a proof is planned and subsequently written up has a lot to do with the form exhibited by the statement we intend to prove. Our attention to this matter here will assist us as we attempt to organize both our thinking and our writing whenever we are faced with the task of creating a proof.
