The Development of Strain-Gradient-Based Finite Elements
Purpose of Lesson To develop and demonstrate a procedure for formulating finite element stiffness matrices using strain gradient notation.
The use of strain gradient notation enables a direct connection to be made between the mathematical representation of a physical problem and the actual physical problem. The physical nature of the notation enables the modeling characteristics of finite element stiffness matrices to be assessed and corrected during their development. This contrasts with the current approach in which the modeling deficiencies are inferred from errors found in the solutions to problems.
The strain gradient approach provides an alternative to existing finite element ...
