Four-Node Quadrilateral Element

Purpose of Lesson To formulate the stiffness matrix and evaluate the modeling characteristics of a four-node quadrilateral finite element.

The strain gradient formulation procedure developed in Lesson 8 is applied to the four-node quadrilateral. Evaluation of the strain models reveals that the incomplete second-order displacement approximation polynomials used in the development introduce an error commonly known as parasitic shear into the element. In the strain gradient approach, this error can be eliminated directly during the formulation process. This differs from the isoparametric approach, which indirectly eliminates parasitic shear during the computation of the stiffness matrix.
