Six-Node Linear Strain Element

Purpose of Lesson To formulate the stiffness matrix and evaluate the modeling characteristics of a six-node linear strain finite element.

The strain gradient formulation procedure developed in Lesson 8 is applied to form the stiffness matrix for the six-node finite element using displacement representations that are complete second-order polynomials. This polynomial basis enables the six-node element to represent all six of the linear variations in the strain components. The six-node element is also known as the linear strain triangle (LST) because of this capability. Since the element is based on complete polynomials it does not contain any parasitic shear terms.
