For me, one of the most wonderful things about animation is that we can create a character from pencil, paint, clay, or pixels and then make an audience believe in him to the point where they laugh and cry along with him. As with any art, we hope to touch our fellow humans and to do that we have to convince them of the reality of our characters. Where does that reality reside? Obviously, we are going to be talking about acting and the way the characters perform on screen and making an engaging personality is essential, whether that personality is a hero or a villain, but how can we construct a living being that is more than a puppet controlled by our off-screen hand?
