Chapter 13. Avatars
WE NOW START to focus on virtual worlds exclusively, and will do so throughout the remaining chapters. We’ve created a virtual world for this book, called Old World—a simple place that illustrates many virtual world concepts.
In a virtual world, you are represented by a character called an avatar. You can customize the avatar and control it by moving it throughout the world. Avatars are the centerpiece of all virtual worlds.
In this chapter we will discuss what typically constitutes an avatar. We’ll look at various rendering techniques, and show an in-depth example of one in particular.
