Active Directory is a distributed directory service with a central repository at its core. In this repository are account and resource objects with a full complement of attributes. Active Directory stores directory data as replicas on multiple domain controllers and maintains consistency through replication. Domain controllers are the workhorses in this infrastructure. They store the domain data and provide the domainwide distribution of this data.
