Chapter 9

Policy Development

An organization’s position on any given issue is based on company policy. This is where employees learn what is expected of them and what they can expect from the company. Company policy needs to be flexible enough to apply to a variety of situations, yet clearly outline what is prohibited and how management will support and protect its employees. The language used in a domestic violence policy must be carefully constructed so that it is comprehensible to every employee, yet easily defensible should the policy be brought into court as evidence. The recommendations in this chapter and the resources included in the Appendix will help you select the policy that best meets the needs of your organization.
