Building Web Sites with a Team

Contribute packs a lot of power in a simplified interface, allowing the non-technically
savvy to modify Web pages with ease.
If you’re a designer working with content contributors using Contribute, you can easily set up your
site to be compatible. Contribute compatibility relies on key team-oriented features discussed else-
where in this chapter: Check In/Check Out and Design Notes.
The key to Contribute is controlled access. Although the program makes it easy for anyone to modify
pages on the Web, it also restricts what changes can be made. Some of the restrictions are inherent in
the type of pages that make up the site—Dreamweaver templates, for example, are ideally suited for
allowing only designated sections of a document to be edited. However, many basic limitations, such
as which pages can be edited, are established by the Contribute administrator. Although Contribute
sites can be administered from within Contribute itself, its tight integration with Dreamweaver pro-
vides another path: The same administrative options are available within Dreamweaver.
To administer Contribute from within Dreamweaver, Contribute 2.0 or better must be
installed on the same machine as Dreamweaver; greater functionality comes from work-
ing with Contribute 3.1 or higher.
