The continent of Africa is made up of 54 countries at the time of writing,¹ more than any other. It is also the most culturally diverse,² with the number of languages spoken estimated to be up to 2,000,³ and the second most populous after Asia.

A history of repression and political unrest has left the majority of the continent underdeveloped in comparison with most of the rest of the world and a legacy of problems to solve. After centuries of damaging occupation by foreign powers, there can be a general distrust of anything from overseas, with a widespread belief that African problems need African solutions.
