CHAPTER 12
432
Summary
This chapter surveyed a few topics that arise when you migrate a legacy HTML-based web application to
RIA. First, you learned about possible migration candidates. Then you saw the challenges and benefits of
different techniques that come into play. You also looked at a couple of framework-based applications
refactored to utilize a Flex interface.
A few things to keep in mind:
Migrating a VM-based web application to Flex implies rewriting it.
HTML-based web applications can be refactored to use a Flex interface.
There are many ways to make a web application talk to a Flex interface. XML and object-
based data exchange are the most common options.
Most web applications are built using a framework. Migrating a framework-based application to
Flex can be thought of as using Flex as the view within the framework’s MVC structure.
Adopting RIA gradually can be beneficial, because you have many ways to follow an incremental adoption
path.
