Proton exchange membranes for fuel cells

V. Arcella, L. Merlo and A. Ghielmi,     Solvay Solexis S.p.A., Italy

Abstract:

This chapter deals with proton exchange membranes (PEM) for fuel cells (FC). Starting with the requirements that a PEM should ideally satisfy, it describes currently employed membrane materials, designs and fabrication processes. It also addresses the issues related to the operation of a PEM in a FC and the methods employed to assess performance and degradation. These aspects are complemented by a short introductory section on fuel cell basics and two sections in which applications and advantages/ limitations of PEM FCs are discussed. The chapter ends by indicating possible future trends in PEM research and citing comprehensive ...
