The world is still mostly powered by fossil fuels. There is an urgent call for renewable resources and new energy conversion technologies that could provide humanity with a safe and sustainable future after the oil reserves have gone. Besides fuel scarcity, the alarming increase in CO2 emissions caused by anthropogenic activity is at least as important. Alternative energy conversion has therefore become highly topical, with research initiatives being launched all over the world, including the Gulf countries and Saudi Arabia, where petroleum is abundant.
