12. Level of Detail—Not the Lowest Level
There are two extremes we can describe in how organizations plan projects. One extreme is a seat-of-the-pants methodology. To our surprise, we have worked with multibillion dollar organizations, undertaking multimillion dollar projects, without any documentation of the project plan. The other extreme is finding hundreds to thousands of tasks, at a level of detail that makes it very difficult to manage or distinguish what is important. The correct answer is not a compromise, but to know when enough is enough. This chapter, and the ones that follow in Part III, provide the necessary knowledge.
