To develop Perl programs correctly, you should understand the versions of Perl that are available and which one you should use. Perl 5.000 was released on October 17, 1994. It was a nearly complete rewrite of Perl 4; however, it was (mostly) backward compatible to Perl 4.

The goal was to create a more efficient language that also had additional useful features. After the release of version 5.000, additional releases were made:
