CHAPTER 13PREVENTION THROUGH DESIGN

Several provisions in Z10.0 and 45001 relate to prevention through design (PtD) concepts. They are Risk Assessments, Design Requirements, Hierarchy of Controls, and Procurement.

Fortunately, an American National Standard exists that provides guidance on the subject. Its designation is ANSI/ASSE Z590.3-2011(R2016) and its title is Prevention through Design: Guidelines for Addressing Occupational Hazards and Risks in Design and Redesign Processes.

This author was privileged to be the chair of the committee that wrote the Z590.3 standard. It will be obvious that what is written here shows a bias in favor of its implementation. This chapter
