Chapter 7: FedSQL

SQL is a success story. Originally developed by IBM in the SEQUEL, XRM, and System R projects, this database language soon turned into a quasi-industry standard for relational databases. At the heart of this success is the American National Standards Institute (ANSI) standard that made communication and interaction between manufacturers and databases easier. The SAS version of SQL, PROC SQL, does not fully comply with the ANSI-1992 standard. Deviating PROC SQL functionalities include the support of SAS macro language (see Chapter 4), how PROC SQL handles missing values (see Chapter 2), and legacy SAS data types.
