Steam turbine design for load-following capability and highly efficient partial operation

Abstract

With regard to the upcoming expansion of the use of renewable energy resources, this chapter introduces a few improvement points applicable to steam turbines: grid code requirements already in place in the United States, Europe, and Japan, response to fault ride through requirement, load frequency control capability of thermal power plants to deal with the load fluctuations caused by renewable energy plants, and the over load valve as one example of the most effective technologies to improve thermal power plant operation.
