WHEN DESCRIBING THE challenges that face higher education in the United States, Kuh, Kinzie, Schuh, and Whitt (2005) observed that the future of postsecondary education facing the country was daunting: “The task is to do something at a scale never before realized—to provide a high quality postsecondary education to more than three quarters of the adult population” (xiii).
