Measurement, signal processing, and uncertainty

Abstract

In this chapter we describe how measured data can be used to estimate the types of statistical and spectral quantities of importance to most aeroacoustic problems and the errors and limitations of that process. This chapter includes discussions of the inherent limitations in measurements and the concept of measurement uncertainty. The methods used to estimate uncertainties in raw measurements, results derived from those measurements, and statistical quantities are also explained. A large part of this chapter is dedicated to explaining how spectra and correlation functions are estimated.
