Africa is urbanising rapidly and is expected to become predominantly urban by 2020. Its urban population increased from 15% of the total in 1960 to 35% in 2006, and is projected to hit nearly 60% by 2020. The rate of urbanisation is now estimated at around 4% annually, the highest rate anywhere in the world.
