Every portfolio reflects the vision of an organization, and each item (project, resource, or asset) inside the portfolio is a specific investment supporting that vision. As with financial portfolios, investors expect that, upon completion, projects will generate cash flow and profits. If the gains from a project exceed the investment made in the project, the return on investment is positive. Although profits are not the only parameter for measuring the success of a project, a positive return on investment is always a good indicator.
