This book proceeds on the basis that artificial intelligence for behavioural science is qualitatively different from behavioural science for artificial intelligence. The bulk of this book, therefore, is orientated towards the former. Nevertheless, it is worth taking some time to consider the latter.
What I have described here as behavioural science for artificial intelligence has been dubbed by Rahwan et al. (2019, p. 477) “machine behaviour,” which they define as “the scientific study of behaviour exhibited by intelligent machines” (pp. 477–478).
