In real-time strategy (RTS) games, high-level AI systems control multiple units, which must be used wisely to defeat the enemy. One prerequisite for accomplishing this is for the AI to have an understanding of the terrain in the area where the battle is taking place (i.e., a terrain analysis). Using this analysis, for example, the AI can decide where to deploy units or find a path to a target that avoids enemy troops. Ideally, the AI precomputes the terrain analysis to minimize the impact on runtime performance.
