Businesses, like individual consumers, are enmeshed in percentages. Salespeople usually earn commissions, which are specified percentages of sales. Manufacturers offer retailers discounts, which again are calculated on a percentage basis. And finally, there are the profits that are calculated as a percentage of sales and as a percentage of investment.
In this chapter, we'll use ideas from Chapter 10, “Ratios and Proportions,” Chapter 14, “Percentages,” and Chapter 15, “Solving Simple Equations.” We'll make reference back to mark-downs in Chapter 21, “Personal Finance.”
