Taking Flight and Sailing Away
After World War II ended, airplanes became all the rage with the American public. Air power had helped the Allies win the war, and commercial aviation benefited from the research and development money poured into new technology. Germany and England had tested jet engines, and the Messerschmitt Me 262 made history as the first operational jet fighter. New airplanes, most of them based on American bombers, emerged for commercial air travel and the demand for civil air transportation exploded.
