The Biggest Market Ever

In 1992, Rich DeVos was attending a meeting in Hong Kong when a distributor there expressed worries about China taking over his country. “Well, I guess if they can come in here, we can go in there,” Rich remarked. In hindsight, he realized it was an impulsive comment, “not thinking that that would be complicated or anything. We will just start to sponsor people over there and move on in.” He talked to Eva Cheng, a woman of Chinese descent who had joined Amway in 1977 and ran the business in Hong Kong. “You go in and I’ll take the business there,” Cheng encouraged Rich. “Well, OK, we’ve got a deal,” he replied. “You are Chinese and you know the Chinese. . . .”1
