Rich and Jay also believed that soap and detergents would be the easiest products for training distributors. It was a matter of which one to use rather than whether to use one at all, and there was no pesky governmental regulation involved. They didn’t have a manufacturing facility of their own, of course, so they scouted around for a product they could distribute. They found a liquid detergent called “Frisk,” which was manufactured by Eckle Company, a small Detroit supplier, and one of the only biodegradable liquid detergents available, a feature they felt would distinguish it from other products. They renamed it “L.O.C. All-Purpose Cleaner” (L.O.C. being an acronym for “liquid organic compound”). The owner of the Frisk product, however, proved to be unreliable and inconsistent. “He sold us products first with red caps, but a later order would have yellow caps, and the next, blue,” Rich recalled. “Sometimes the liquid was clear and other times yellow.” One time, Jay and Rich received a shipment and the labels fell off the bottles. They found another supplier, only to have the original one sue them for a quarter of a million dollars, saying they’d stolen his formula.3 The partners next acquired SA8, one of the first biodegradable powder detergents—biodegradable meaning it will break down and decompose into elements found in nature in a short time.4 The term is often used to describe a product that is “environmentally friendly,” which became more and more important ...
