Enough Is Enough

One more lawsuit continued to drag on. The U.S. District Court jury in Salt Lake City ruled in March 2007 that four former Amway distributors had, indeed, spread false rumors linking Procter & Gamble to Satanism to advance their own business. A jury awarded Procter & Gamble $19.25 million in the civil case. A federal judge previously had dismissed the lawsuit, and the U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in Denver had agreed. The case was reinstated after further appeal. Randy Haugen said he was shocked by the jury verdict. “It’s hard to imagine they’d pursue it this long, especially after all the retractions we put out,” he said. “We are stunned. All of us.”20 The defendants appealed. The next month a U.S. District judge awarded almost $13 million in prejudgment interest to Procter & Gamble. The Amway distributors faced the possibility of postjudgment interest if their appeal failed. Procter & Gamble also cross-appealed, asking for treble damages.

Thirteen proved to be the Amway distributors’ unlucky number. The 13-year epic battle between the soap titans finally ended in December 2008, when the defendants dropped their appeal. Haugen and his wife, Valorie, went on to become Black Diamonds at MonaVie, a multilevel marketing company that markets health juices based on the acai berry, found in the Amazon rain forest, and other nutritional products.
