As the DeVos and Van Andel families’ influence continued to spread in conservative circles, Rich became the consummate insider, taken inside the fold as a member of the Council for National Policy, which the New York Times described as “a little-known club of a few hundred of the most powerful conservatives in the country.”23 An aura of secrecy surrounded the organization. The membership list remained confidential. Meetings were closed to the media and held at undisclosed locations. Its Web site gives little information about the council except to say that it promotes limited government, traditional values, and a strong national defense. Jay also was involved in conservative organizations as a long-time trustee of the Heritage Foundation and the Hudson Institute, both conservative think tanks founded on principles of free enterprise, limited government, individual freedom, traditional American values, and a strong national defense. Hudson’s founder, futurist Herman Kahn, described its philosophy as “contrarianism,” uninfluenced by money or ideology.24 Another Hudson trustee, Emmanuel A. Kampouris, retired chairman and chief executive officer of American Standard Companies, Inc., also served on Alticor’s board.
