Under British law, Rich couldn’t receive a donor heart there if a British subject also was a match. He also had to stay near the hospital in case a donor heart became available. That meant relocating to London. When Charles W. Colson phoned his friend on January 1, 1997, to wish him a happy new year, Rich didn’t know whether he had a year ahead of him. He told Colson he was leaving for England and that he and Helen were moving temporarily into a London hotel suite. “His voice was melancholy, and I don’t think he expected to come home alive,” Colson recalled. “I wondered if I would ever see him again on this Earth. Before I hung up, I reminded him, ‘Christians never say good-bye, so let’s just say au revoir—until we meet again.’”2

The DeVos’s children, Dick, Dan, Cheri, and Doug, and their families visited Rich and Helen in London and tried to keep up their parents’ spirits, but the situation was beginning to look bleak.
