IN ORDER TO function as a social group, we often avoid direct communication which might lead to conflict. There is a tendency to reach for social consensus: to gloss over or ignore difficult facts and to emerge with a version of reality that is not too challenging for any member of the group.

Organizations cannot allow this human tendency to disguise the need for radical action on key issues. Colleagues must be encouraged to be frank, honest and “candid”.
