Leaders with appropriate skills are needed at various levels within an organisation; the more complex the environment, the more capacity for complexity is required of a leader to be effective. Chapter 8 describes the concepts of horizontal and vertical development and the differences between them. We need to be conscious of development in both. However, effective leadership in a complex and fast-changing environment puts the emphasis on vertical growth and the development of particular capacities: to be reflective, to be self-aware, to open up to competing perspectives – and to manage conflict with equanimity.
