Goals for Regulation

In this chapter, we describe some of the most common goals for regulation that are shared across many different national markets. There is a lot of overlap between these goals, and sometimes there is conflict. For example, one of the major problems in providing investor protection comes from broker/dealers who have incentives both to represent their customers and to profit from the information they receive from the activities they undertake, often in supporting their customers. These two business objectives create a classic conflict of interest. Figure 4.4 shows the most common types of regulation.
